Employing a patented digital pattern recognition technology, Nielsen BDS captures in excess of 100 million song detections annually on more than 1200 radio stations in over 130 markets in the United States (including Puerto Rico) and 22 Canadian markets.´

How it works:

Songs are encoded by a computer, which creates a digital ´fingerprint´ that is used by BDS monitor sites. These monitors listen to a station´s frequency 24/7. Whenever a song is played on one of these stations, BDS searches its ´fingerprint´ database and logs the date and time the station aired the song.

BDS is currently detecting over 1.5 million songs per week on radio.
